Dadar Flower Market, Mumbai

Chaos, fun, a riot of colours and happiness all mixed into one emotion! the pleasant and overwhelming mixed fragrance of flowers. The tiny, narrow lane is lined with kiosks, stalls and even wooden planks with one thing in common, flowers and the sweet fragrance. From religious ceremonies and festivals to marriages, this market is at the heart of it all. Market brings you every flower under the Sun. from Roses to Mogra, from Gerbera daisies to Orchids and from Lotus to Peonies, the desi varieties to imported ones.

The Dadar Flower Market, also known as “Phool Gully” is up and running before sunrise when vendors come in from around Mumbai with their stock of the freshest and most colorful flowers. Mumbai can often be a sensory overload but Dadar’s Flower Market is a place that takes a different approach to the same thought. Dadar often splits opinions because of how it’s a beautiful and cultural neighborhood, yet one of the most crowded areas in Mumbai. The railway station can be overwhelming and suffocating for anyone who isn’t used to Mumbai’s crowd or someone who might be claustrophobic.

Vendors can be seen wrapping up the flowers in neatly rolled bundles, making sure they’re vibrant by sprinkling them with water, and proudly showing off their collection of fine florals. In the midst of that they hustle to attract customers with wholesale prices. It almost seems like not only do they expect to bargain, but they also enjoy it !

There are vendors walking with heavy baskets on their heads and shoulders to catch the local train and supply the flowers all over the city. The unrelenting crowd won’t be welcoming at all and bargaining is the general norm here.

People from every corner of life come here to get flowers for Weddings, Religious Ceremonies, and Decorations. This largest flower market of Mumbai sells over 1000 Kg of flowers.

You name it and they have it. Marigold, Roses, Orchids, Lotus, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangeas, Rajnigandha, Daisies, The Desi Varieties to imported ones – everything!

Conclusion:

Capture raw emotions, random conversations with people and see the multiple types of flowers on one roof. I saw such a big flower market for the first time. It’s a pity that he went at the wrong time but still had a good experience. If you want to go, go early morning time.
